Here are watering tips that you can use this summer to keep your plants healthy.
Summer is the season that brings the most intense heat. This means that, for proper landscape maintenance, summer will also be the season that requires the most watering. The hotter the weather gets, the greater the demand for water will be for your plants. Otherwise, plants can die out rather quickly, so it’s imperative that you stay on top of watering tasks so that they make it through the summer season. Here are watering tips that you can use this summer to keep your plants healthy.
Make Sure You Water the Roots Rather Than the Foliage
The roots of your plants are responsible for absorbing water. That’s why, when you water your plants, you should aim for the roots. If water is left to sit on leaves and other foliage, that water can actually magnify the rays of the sun. This makes it more likely for your foliage to get burnt by the sun.
Water Your Plants Deeply
Annual and perennial plants will need varied levels of watering. Vegetables, as well as flowers you plant during the same season, are going to have shallow roots. This means that less water is needed to access the roots.
Perennial roots will likely be developed more deeply into your soil. As such, you’re going to need to water more deeply in order to reach the roots. With that said, while perennials need a deep soak, you won’t have to water them as frequently as annuals. This is because perennials can reach into the moist soil underneath, whereas annuals don’t.
Do Your Watering Routine Either in the Morning or Evening
Morning and evening are the best times of day to get watering done. This is because the sun isn’t at its peak during these times. This gives water more time to get to the roots of your plants before the water evaporates. Another way to delay the evaporation of water is to cover your soil in straw. You’ll want to get several inches’ worth of straw to cover your soil for the best results.
