When your lawn experiences too much rain, there are problems that can arise.
Summer is a season that’s filled with plenty of warmth and sunshine. It’s not always going to be this way, however, as there will sometimes be periods of rain that you encounter as well. While there’s nothing wrong with a little rain, especially during the hottest season of the year, there is such a thing as too much. When your lawn experiences too much rain, there are problems that can arise.
Fungal Growth
Whenever anything gets wet for a long period of time, it’s likely that fungus will start to develop. This statement applies to your lawn, as well, as it’s possible for mushrooms to start popping up if your grass gets too wet due to excessive rainfall. Sometimes, your lawn might start showing indicators of disease infestation.
Your Lawn Can Lose Nutrients
When it rains for a long time, the ground can start getting extra saturated with water. When soil is saturated, it becomes incapable of absorbing any more moisture. As a result, your yard can experience excess runoff, causing a sort of “mini flood”. This flooding can make your lawn lose a lot of fertilizer and nutrients, preventing your roots from absorbing them to strengthen the grass.
Weed Growth
Rain might be known for making grass grow, but that’s not the only thing that can start growing. You might also see weeds rising up from your lawn. If this happens to you, you’ll want to contact a landscaping company that deals with weed control so they can help to resolve this issue for you.
Your Roots Can Suffocate
Whenever the grass is getting too much water, the roots can actually start suffocating and drowning. This is because oxygen has a harder time penetrating the root system, preventing your lawn from getting the oxygen it needs to thrive.
Shallow Root Growth
As we stated previously, soil gets saturated in the face of excess rain. This means that plants don’t need their roots to travel deeply to get water. As such, rainy weather conditions encourage shallow root growth. This isn’t an issue when the weather is rainy, but it becomes a problem once the weather dries up again. This is because, when the weather is dry, plants need their roots to travel more deeply to access water, but the roots are already developed closer to the surface.
