Caring For Your Lawn As Temperatures Drop

Use these 5 tips to make sure you have a healthy lawn all year.

At a certain point in the fall, the temperature drops, which presents a new set of challenges for maintaining your lawn. You may find yourself wondering how you can maintain a healthy lawn during this colder part of the year. Here are five tips you can use to ensure your lawn is protected all season long.

Water Until The First Frost

Some people may think that fall is a time to stop watering their lawn, but this is not the case. The rain that will fall on your lawn may help, but it is important to make sure your lawn is properly hydrated. Your grass will still grow in the fall so it is important to continue nurturing it until the first frost comes.

Continue Mowing

In the same way, it is important to keep mowing your lawn during the fall months. Eventulally, your lawn’s growth will slow down, but until then it is important to keep mowing it to an acceptable length. If it gets too long, you can experience problems with matting. If it’s too short you may be hindering its ability to store nutrients for growth.

Weed Your Lawn

Fall is a great time to remove weeds like crabgrass and dandelions from your lawn. Weeds are bad for your lawn because they can take valuable nutrients from it and leave it depleted.  Whether you take them out by hand or use a herbicide, make sure to get rid of the weeds that can harm your lawn.

Seed Your Lawn

Seeding in the fall will give it a good amount of time to germinate. During the fall and winter, turf roots experience a large amount of growth. Investing in a high-quality seed is especially important in the fall because cheaper seed may not survive the first frost. Choosing the best seed will result in a lawn that is lush and healthy.

Fertilize

Using fertilizer is important because it offers your lawn nutrients for storage and growth. It’s essential to fertilize your lawn before the first frost so your lawn can survive the cold temperatures of late fall and winter. Also, using fertilizer promotes root growth and could result in your lawn being among the first to grow in the spring.
