Lawn Mowing Errors People Make

Here are some common lawn mowing errors that people could make.

Spring is a season that’s filled with maintenance tasks for your outdoor landscape. One of these tasks is to mow the lawn. While lawn mowing can seem like a simple task on the surface, there are mistakes that can be made during the mowing process, and these mistakes are fairly common. It’s best to know what these mistakes are so that you can prevent them in the future. Here are some common lawn mowing errors that people could make.

Cutting the Grass Too Short

Sometimes, people might cut the grass too short during lawn mowing. The height of your grass actually has a significant effect on how healthy your lawn is. Shorter grass lends itself to more weed growth, and the roots of your grass get more sun exposure, making it harder to water your lawn. Generally, we recommend keeping your lawn at around four inches for optimal health.

Not Doing Lawn Mowing Frequently Enough

Optimal lawn health also requires you to know how often lawn mowing is needed. Generally speaking, a weekly lawn mowing should be sufficient. Some people try every other week instead, but this adds extra stress to the grass.

When mowing your lawn, you don’t want to cut any more than a third of the grass blade with each time you mow. This will have minimal impact on the grass itself while still keeping it from growing too much.

Using a Dull Blade to Cut Your Grass

The quality of lawn mowing you get depends on how sharp the blades are when you start cutting your grass. Sharp blades are definitely more suitable for lawn mowing because they make clean cuts. When you use dull blades, rather than making clean and accurate cuts, you instead, effectively, tear grass out from the ground. This leaves your grass all jagged, making it harder to recover.

Doing Lawn Mowing After It Has Rained

We don’t recommend lawn mowing after a rain storm. If you try to cut your grass right after it’s rained, your lawn mower could leave tire tracks on the ground. Wet grass blades also have a tendency to group together. This makes it more likely for you to get an uneven trim during the mowing process. Wait until your grass has had time to dry before you attempt to cut it.
