Tree Maintenance Tips to Follow This Summer

Here are tree maintenance tips that are good to follow this summer season.

While it may seem like trees can stand tall under their own power, there’s actually a lot of work that goes into caring for them so that they can continue to thrive. It’s vital that you provide a strong and healthy foundation for any trees you have so that they can live for years to come. Here are tree maintenance tips that are good to follow this summer season.

Provide Your Trees With Mulch

Mulch does wonders for people’s gardens, and it can work just as well on your trees. Using mulch, your soil can retain more moisture, which means your tree roots should be able to absorb more water. Generally, applying mulch around 2-4 inches deep should suffice. Don’t pile mulch against your trees, however, because that doesn’t offer as much utility to the roots, which are what really need the utility that mulch provides.

Give Your Trees Water

Watering is a big part of tree maintenance, especially in the scorching summer months. As it turns out, overwatering is actually fairly common for homeowners to do, and this can cause problems to the root systems of your trees.

To help prevent overwatering, it’s good to have a watering schedule. Usually, twice a month is a good watering rate, and it should be twice the amount as the tree’s root ball. With that said, water intake for different trees can vary, so it’s also a smart idea to contact a professional landscaping company for advice on what a suitable watering schedule would be.

Occasional Pruning is Helpful

Another important part of tree maintenance is pruning, which is the removal of dead or diseased branches and leaves. By getting rid of unwanted branches and foliage, you can encourage your trees to develop buds instead of bringing back rotting branches.

Use Fertilizer Every Now and Then

Fertilizer is another way to get extra nutrients to your trees, just like mulch. Just because fertilizer can be helpful, however, that doesn’t mean it’s okay to use whenever you want. You should only ever use fertilizer whenever soil conditions aren’t ideal, or if the tree that you’re fertilizing is a newly-planted one.
